First thing this morning while packing for an interview shoot we got word that Feisol Tripods is providing us with an extremely light weight, carbon fiber tripod for use in Congo. Video tripods tend to be big and heavy and not something easily packed when you’re heading to someplace as off the beaten path as this. This full-sized tripod should hit the scale at about three pounds and fit into my carry-on case.

We’ll more than likely put it to use when we do some unrelated documentary work in rural Ensenada, Mexico in a few weeks. I can’t wait. Thank you Feisol!

Update and What we Still Need

With the shipment of medical supplies now on its way, we have a little better idea of when we’ll be leaving for Congo. The container was loaded on board Friday evening and hopefully on the high seas as we speak. It’s estimated to reach the Port of Kinshsa January 30, 2012. It’s unknown how long it will remain in port before making it’s way to Kafumba.
Best guess is that we will be leaving the second half of February.

What do we still need to make this crazy documentary happen? Well, besides money…

A solar-power solution for charging 14v batteries and a lap top.
Lots and lots of 32gb SD cards, class 6 or faster
~~A lightweight (carbon fiber) tripod~~
A small run-and-gun rig for DSLR would be a help.
Freeze-dried food packets

We can provide tax-documents as a 501 c 3 and willing to do whatever needed to make this all happen.

Shipment approved for Congo

I recevied this email recently:

It is with great joy that we get the tell you that the long awaited shipment destined for Kafumba and Malela in the D.R. Congo has been approved for shipping as of about 20 minutes ago. This is the container that includes the water well drilling rig, two quads, boat and motor, chainsaws, building materials, sewing machines, medical supplies and equipment and computers.

So this means the shipment will be loaded this Friday. We’ve done some filming but this means filming for real starts Friday morning as volunteers pack the 40′ shipping container. After that we should get our travel plans so we know when we’re leaving.
